The Eyelid Lift Procedure

At Sanctuary Cosmetic Center, Dr. Rostami performs all eyelid lift surgeries at our Tysons location. From this location, we can bring the best in eyelid surgery to all Washington, D.C. areas. As a board-certified ophthalmologist first, then as a specialist in oculofacial plastic surgery, she truly understands the intricacies presented by the musculature and underlying structures of the eye area. Your consultation with Dr. Rostami will consist of a range of questions, including your eye health, your family eyelid history, the supplements you take, and even the position of your eyebrows. As an expert on eyes and eyelids, your consultation with Dr. Rostami will include questions not typically asked by other surgeons. She will then suggest the best surgical approach for you.

At Sanctuary Cosmetic Center, Dr. Rostami will perform your surgery on-site in our state-of-the-art certified surgical suite under local anesthesia. Recovery is short with residual swelling and bruising possible depending on your age and general health.

Upper Eyelids

  • Incisions are made in the upper eyelid crease, making the incision line almost invisible when completely healed.
  • Incisions are closed with removable sutures.
  • Downtime is a few days to a week.  

Lower Eyelids

  • Incisions are made transconjunctival (from inside the lower eyelid), requiring no sutures when only fatty deposits need to be removed or repositioned.
  • Incisions are made subcilliary (directly under the lower eyelashes) when fatty deposits and excess skin need to be removed.

What is an eyelid lift (blepharoplasty)?

An eyelid lift, also known as blepharoplasty, is a procedure used to improve the appearance of the eyes. It addresses drooping eyelids and under-eye puffiness and can ensure nothing interferes with your peripheral vision. In some cases it can be medically necessary the drooping eye lid procedure or upper Blepharoplasty can be covered by insurance.

Who is a good candidate for an eyelid lift?

Good candidates for an eyelid lift are healthy individuals with realistic expectations who are struggling with heavy upper eyelids, puffy or wrinkled lower eyelids, dark circles under the eyes, and/or loose sagging lower eyelid skin.

What can I expect during the consultation for an eyelid lift?

Your consultation with Dr. Rostami will include giving us a full history of your eye health, family eye history, general health, allergies and medication list. Dr. Rostami will also perform an examination and then recommend the best treatment plan for you.

How is the eyelid lift procedure performed?

How is the eyelid lift procedure performed?rnFor an upper eyelid lift, incisions are made in the upper eyelid crease so the incisions won’t be visible when healed. Excess skin will be removed, and the eyelid will be lifted to a better position. For a lower eyelid lift, all incisions are made inside the lower eyelid or directly under the lower eyelashes. Excess fat and skin is then removed or repositioned. If only fat is removed, no sutures are needed.

What is the recovery process like after an eyelid lift?

The recovery process is relatively simple. One to two weeks of downtime are required, and you will have some bruising and swelling. You’ll want to avoid strenuous activities, keep your head elevated, and rest as much as possible. You’ll also need to avoid touching or rubbing your eyes. Final results are visible after a few weeks.

Are there any risks or complications associated with eyelid lift surgery?

Risks associated with eyelid lift include bleeding, dryness, infection, discomfort, swelling, bruising, and numbness.

How long do the results of an eyelid lift last?

An upper eyelid lift typically lasts 10 to 12 years, while the results of a lower eyelid lift are usually permanent.

Will there be visible scars after the surgery?

Because the incisions are made within the natural crease of the eye or along the lash line, any scarring will be minimal and unnoticeable after a few weeks.

Can an eyelid lift be combined with other facial procedures?

Absolutely! An eyelid lift can be combined with a facelift, brow lift, or many other cosmetic procedures.

Is the procedure done under sedation?

In most cases, blepharoplasty or eyelid lift can be done with local anesthesia or awake sedation. In some cases depending it would be done under MAC or Twighlight sedation where the patient is given an IV to calm and sleep but they will be breathing on their own.

How long does the procedure take?

An eyelid lift can take as little as 30 minutes and up to 2 hours if the upper and lower eyelids are done at the same time.

Where is the procedure done?

The procedure is done in our AAAHC-accredited surgical center for maximum safety and if anesthesia is needed it would be provided by a board-certified anesthesiologist.

Anything else I need to know?

after your initial consultation with Dr. Rostami, you will have a patient care coordinator who will provide you with all the details, available dates and what to expect leading to, during and after the procedure. rnWhen you book your procedure date, you will be given your surgical packet which includes all pre and post procedure instructions, things you need to avoid before the procedure like blood thinners, and the consents that you need to read and sign. rnrnIf the procedure is done under anesthesia, we might request a medical clearance form to be filled by your primary care physician to make sure you are in optimal health for surgery. rnrnOnce the date is set, another meeting with Dr. Rostami will occur so she can finalize the procedure booking, answer any new questions you might have and for both the doctor and patient to set expectation. Your pictures will be taken to track progress, healing and the results of the procedure.

How much does an eyelid lift cost?

How much an eyelid lift costs depends on a number of factors, including whether you’re having a lower or upper eyelid lift or if you’re having both done together.

Eyelid Lift Results
